Zinc Plating Glossary
In recent years the electrodeposition of zinc has become extensively used for finishing all manners of Iron and steel components, covering the whole spectrum of the manufacturing industry.
The Zinc deposit itself is of a bluish / white appearance, and its metallic structure has great advantages over other typical coatings. The deposit is sacrificial to the base metal meaning that the Zinc corrodes preferentially to the underlying metal, thereupon giving the coating excellent corrosion resistance. Zinc is also very competitively priced thus making it relatively inexpensive compared with other finishes.
As well as manually operated processing lines EIC Finishing Services also have fully automatic production lines, for barrel and vat plating capable of producing the following finishes:
- Bright - Giving the surface a bluish / white coloration.
- Chromate - Giving the surface a yellow iridescent colour which enhances the surface finish and improves the corrosion resistance.
- Black - Producing a black, lustrous, highly corrosion resistant film to the coating.
- Olive drab - Producing a dark green corrosion resistant finish.
The thickness of Zinc applied on a commercial basis is between the limits of 8 - 25 microns (0.0003 to 0.001”) or to the relevant BS or Aerospace spec.
