Phosphating Glossary
Phosphating can be used for a wide range of applications within the manufacturing industry. There are four main areas of use for phosphate treatment:
- Pretreatment before painting due to its high porosity into which the paint can key.
- Protection against corrosion when used in conjunction with an oil seal.
- Anti wear - Phosphate coatings can be used as efficient lubricant carrier, providing resistance to wear and are particularly advantageous on sliding surfaces.
- Phosphate coatings can act either on their own or as carriers for suitable lubricants as a production aid in cold metal working operations such as cold forming.
At EIC Finishing Services we can provide two types of phosphate finish, on iron and steel.
- Class 1 - is a manganese based phosphate and is primarily used on moving / wearing surfaces, either as a solid lubricant or as a porous base for oils, it also has good corrosion resistant properties if sealed with an appropriate oil.
- Class 2 - is a zinc based phosphate, and is used mainly for rust proofing under paint finishes. It is also ideal for bonding rubber or plastics to steel, anti wear and anti fretting applications, and is also an excellent lubricant carrier.
Coating Measurement
Phosphate coatings are measured in grams per square metre, where Class 1 falls within the range 10 to 30 g/m² and Class 2 falls within the range 4.5 to 10 g/m².
